Today the government of Egypt has ordered the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of pigs in the country in fear of the “swine flu”.
The move is not expected to block the H1N1 virus from striking, as the illness is spread by people and not present in Egyptian swine. But acting against pigs, largely viewed as unclean in conservative Muslim Egypt, could help quell a panic.
There is no scientific evidence to date that this new H1N1 virus affects pigs, and therefore it should be considered as a new human influenza virus. End of story. Stop killing pigs for no reason. Or maybe stop eating pork? What do animals rights activists have to say about all this? The government of Egypt has wanted an excuse to “move pigs away from urban centers” for a long time now, and finally has a reason to wipe them out altogether.
