Nice premise, but when hasn’t society been on the brink of collapse?
In the U.S. and globally, many societies have been on the brink of collapse since most societies I can think of have chosen to enrich and empower a relative few at the expense of the many. It seems that as long as there exists corrupt and brutal societies, governments and even organizations who are willing to torment and subjugate whole populations while protecting their own money-flavored pie, they each contribute directly to the sad spectacle that is poverty, lack of honest and transparent media, poor health for so many and a seriously sad and overwhelming feeling that they just don’t give a damn.
As long as there are those in power (by whom I mean those who rule in any way) who behave seemingly constitutionally incapable of allowing themselves to empower any of Us – anywhere because of their power hunger or capitalist greed, it is a loss for everyone, themselves included. When the insatiability that is the “contradiction of capitalism” causes cruel effects upon most of the population (in the U.S. or anywhere) through lack of clean water, medicine, adequate housing, inflicted violence, or withholding free media information from 83% of the planet (thanks for that TED link, Jenny), we All suffer.
Like Michael Moore said in Capitalism: A Love Story, there are a lot more of us than there are of them. So technically we could “push it over the edge”.

Overzealous Cops Cost Atlanta $40,000 for Seizing Video
ATLANTA — An East Atlanta man is about to be $40,000 richer thanks to some overzealous police officers.
“Police accountability is really an important issue to a lot of people right now,” Marlon Kautz told 11Alive News.
Officers told Kautz to quit taping them with his cell phone, and he refused.
“Eventually they twisted my arm behind my back and basically tried to pry the phone out of my hands and eventually they did,” he said.
“If you stand back away from the officers and you’re in a public place, you have an absolute right under 11th Circuit [Court of Appeals] law to photograph or video [tape] those officers,” said Dan Grossman, one of Kautz’s attorneys.
